Enhanced Recycling Programs
Hard & Soft back Books
Old books taking up space in your home? Mecklenburg County will accept them at our 4 full service convenience centers at no cost, linked below. If the books are in good condition we would like to encourage you to donate them to one of the many programs/ sources located around Mecklenburg County. If the books have reached the end of their practical use simply bring them to one of our full service centers and drip them off in our specially marked book recycling bins. As with other enhanced recycling, we do not want any plastic with the books you are dropping off at our sites. This includes plastic bags, covers, CD’s, etc.. Please remove all plastic and non-book material before disposing of in the proper container.
In 2023 Mecklenburg County customers recycled 124,000 pounds of hard and soft back books!
Shredded paper
Mecklenburg County will accept shredded paper at the 4 full service convenience centers linked below. Like other recyclables we do not want the shredded paper disposed of in plastic bags. Plastic bags cannot be processed in our centers or facilities and shredded paper should be brought in clean, loose, and dry. If you transport shredded paper in plastic bags we ask that you empty out the shredded material into the correct container and take your plastic bag with you to one of the many local retailers who accept them or simply dispose of it in one of the trash containers on site.
In 2023 Mecklenburg County customers recycled 30,000 pounds of shredded paper!

Cleaning out your closet? Refreshing the sheets or towels in your home? Mecklenburg County is now accepting all your clothes, shoes, and accessories. We will even take your linens (pillow, sheets, towels, etc..). Accessories include items like belts vests and hats. If your items can be repurposed as clothing they will be, items that cannot be repurposed will be used as secondary ground fiber and used as towels and similar products. Just look for the Big Blue Bins at our 4 full service recycling centers linked below!
In 2023 Mecklenburg County customers recycled 76,000 pounds of textiles!
